Scientific Advisory Directors:

Mark Ratain, MD

Dr. Mark Ratain is currently a Professor of Medicine, Chairman of the Committee on Clinical Pharmacology and Pharmacogenomics, and Associate Director for the Clinical Sciences Cancer Research Center at The University of Chicago’s Section of Hematology & Oncology. He is a graduate of Harvard University and received his medical degree from Yale University. He completed his residency training at Johns Hopkins University Hospital and his fellowship in Oncology at The University of Chicago. Dr. Ratain has published well over 250 peer-reviewed scientific papers and is a member of 10 U.S. and European medical/oncology professional societies.

Dr. Ratain is an expert in the use of investigational agents to treat advanced solid tumors in stage I and II drug trials. He serves as chair of the Pharmacogenetics of Anticancer Agents Research (PAAR) Group, which brings together teams of experts from across the nation to investigate advancements in anticancer treatments.

Michael F. Roizen, MD

Dr. Michael Roizen is the co-founder of RealAge and the Chairman of the RealAge Scientific Advisory Board. He is also the current Chairman of the Division of Anesthesia and Critical Care Medicine at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He has been the CEO of the Biotechnology Research Corporation of Central New York, Chairman of the Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care at The University of Chicago Medical Center, and Dean of The Upstate Medical Center School of Medicine in Syracuse, NY.

Dr. Roizen is a graduate of Williams College and received his medical degree from The University of California, San Francisco. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at Harvard's Beth Israel Hospital and participated in research at the National Institutes of Health with both Irv Kopin and the Nobel Prize winner Julius Axelrod.

Dr. Roizen is a past Chairman of The Food and Drug Administration’s advisory committee and a former editor of six medical journals. He has published more than 155 peer-reviewed scientific papers, 100 textbook chapters, 30 editorials, and 4 medical books, including a medical best-seller. He has also been granted 12 U.S. patents and several foreign patents.

Gilberto Schwartsmann, MD, PhD

Dr. Gilberto Schwartsmann is a Professor of Oncology at The Federal University in Porto Allegre, Brazil, and the head of Medical Oncology at Hospital Mario Kroeff in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He completed postgraduate Oncology training at The University of London, received his Ph.D. from The Free University of Amsterdam, and completed his postdoctoral studies at The National Cancer Institute. He is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Medicine and is Director of the South American Office for Anticancer Drug Development.

He was a member of the ASCO International Affairs Committee and the ASCO Scientific Program Committee. He is currently a member of the Editorial Board of numerous international journals, including Annals of Oncology, The Oncologist, and Cancer Treatment Reviews. He has published over 100 papers in peer-reviewed medical and scientific journals and has authored numerous chapters and books on Oncology.

David Kelsen, MD, PhD

Dr. David Kelsen is the current Chairman of Medical Oncology and Chief of Gastrointestinal Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Institute, New York. He has lectured around the world on gastrointestinal cancers and is one of the pre-eminent names in gastrointestinal cancer. Furthermore, he has chaired many FDA advisory committees. His team of researchers is generally regarded as one of the best in the world for cancer basic science research and clinical trials, and he has been the head of numerous cancer clinical trials. He has published over 230 papers in peer-reviewed medical and scientific journals.

Rai Hai Liu, PhD

Dr.Rai Hai Liu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Food Science at Cornell. Dr. Liu received his Ph.D. from Cornell University. He also holds an M.S. in Nutrition and Food Toxicology as well as a medical degree from Harbin Medical School in China. He has published over 75 scientific peer-reviewed papers.

His research program focuses on diet and cancer, effects of functional foods and nutraceuticals on chronic disease, and risks of active agents in herbal remedies for cancer and hepatitis. He has developed numerous research protocols to evaluate natural products for anti-cancer activity.
