Overview:

CanThao Corporation is an emerging specialty pharmaceutical company with a focus on novel oncologic therapeutics. It seeks to develop effective anti-cancer therapies with minimal adverse side effects. Its’ current lead product is a composition known as CT-630. CT-630 is a fixed-dose, orally bioavailable agent that is a combination of GRAS compounds that possess well-established, potent tumoristatic and/or antioxidant activities. Synergy between the product’s compounds appears to cause dramatic and unique anti-tumor effects without any clinically significant side-effects. It has also been shown to significantly prolong life expectancy, even in cancers typically resistant to chemotherapy. CT-630 is currently being evaluated against gastrointestinal cancer in human clinical trials.

Opportunity:

Advanced gastrointestinal (GI) cancer, marked by local extension or widespread metastases, is often deemed untreatable by oncologists. Survival for patients diagnosed with such cancers seldom reaches one year, and often is measured on the scale of months or even weeks. Depending on specific anatomic considerations, patients with advanced GI cancer may undergo heroic but crippling tumor exenteration operations, radiation, thromboembolic ablation procedures, or highly toxic intraarterial chemotherapy infusions as a last resort. In spite of the debilitating effects and significant expense, none of these therapeutic options provide long-term remission. In fact, even short-term tumor regression response rates documented by radiographic or laboratory markers seldom reach 15%. Worldwide, it is estimated that over 1 million new diagnoses of untreatable non-colorectal GI cancers are made each year. If colorectal cancer is included, the worldwide numbers almost triple. In the U.S. alone, there is an incidence of over 150,000 cases annually of all forms of GI cancer. Consequently, there is significant market opportunity for new therapeutic modalities in the treatment of advanced GI cancer.
